The construction industry continues to face a growing skills challenge. Fewer young people are entering the sector, while the average age of the trades workforce continues to rise. With demand for skilled workers increasing, the industry needs new approaches to recruitment and training.
The Government’s response in England is the creation of ten Construction Technical Excellence Colleges (CTECs), providing regional training hubs for the industry. The colleges will benefit from investment in high-quality courses, teaching and greater engagement with small and medium-sized businesses.
This is particularly important in construction, where many trades are delivered through SMEs. Although these roles are relatively protected from the impact of artificial intelligence, the cost of recruitment and employment can make it difficult for smaller businesses to invest in apprentices and workforce development.
Sam Egan, Group Director CTEC at The Bedford College Group, is responsible for steering the ten colleges and helping ensure the investment delivers for the construction industry.
